Aviation fuel for aircraft and Diesel fuel for the Gan Power Station was all delivered by sea in Tankers. Two mooring buoys, tethered by heavy steel chains, were fitted either side of the Oil Jetty and the arriving tankers would use these to moor up just at the edge of the lagoon reef, stern-on to the Jetty. Their fuel load would then be pumped via a hose and the Gan fixed pipelines to the fuel tanks at the eastern end of the island. This picture shows a BP Tanker discharging its fuel load. |
